Jabber+Google

I don't want to hear any more complaints about not knowing what Jabber is or how you don't have an account. Why? You can now use username@gmail.com for Jabber if you connect to talk.google.com . Pretty much anything that supports more than one protocol supports Jabber.

[edit: Bad news: you can't talk to people on other servers (yet).
And here's the official page, with client]

It's worth mentioning that it can be used in Trillian Pro with it's Jabber plugin.

What's confusing me is that iChat (AV 2.1) is not allowing me to add another account...

Google Talk is nifty...but another IM client? I doubt it will ever become the new IM leader. AIM has that more then locked down. (particularly in the US...and I hate AOL)

People are still trying to get a hold of a gmail account..nevermind use it as a chat medium.

Er, I regret to inform you that Jabber has been around for years, so it isn't anything new. It's widely supported in chat clients. The only problem has been evangelism, and that's something Google can definitely do.

I'm a bit confused by people having trouble getting a hold of GMail accounts. Both of my accounts have 50 invites. The isnoop spooler had thousands lying around when it was asked to stop. There's another one that has about 300. I can understand people not knowing about the spooler, but with 50 invites per-account, there shouldn't be a shortage.

I know Jabber has been around (duh)...and yet you kinda enhance my point. Everyone still uses AIM. So all I am saying is I dont see where Google Talk fits in from a business stand point. I have it. I just dont see it making it over the long haul.

Sorry, I get a lot of "what the heck is Jabber?" so I don't assume most people know what it is.

Google has claimed that they're trying to be as open as possible, but their Jabber server doesn't even route messages to other servers, much less support transports (so you could talk to people using AIM, MSN, Y!M, etc.). Heck, their server doesn't even support chats (aka confrences). If they don't add those then I absolutely agree. I'm actually a bit peeved with them for this half-assed release because people are going to pick it up, find they can't do anything with it, and move on.

agreed...in fact it was by accident I discovered that things between ** made it bold... (and I know you can use other clients...but im talking basic terms) I guess thats why they call it beta. lol.

google talk

I'm not sure if anybody's aware of it, or if it's just to obvious to point out, but you know that google just released their own beta client yesterday, right? www.google.com/talk

there's chat conferences, the voice thing works, and they claim that it will support other services (MSN, AIM etc) in time

oh, and it's quite nifty, in a very simplistic way

Re: google talk

Yeah, I added a link to the post a while ago ;)

I've also picked apart their extensions to Jabber.
